AVALON : Council Moves Meetings to Accessible Building

Avalon City Council will move to new chambers on Catalina Island next month in an attempt to comply with federal law requiring access for disabled people to all city buildings.
The council now meets on the second floor of City Hall on Metropole Avenue, and the building has no elevator.
The city is building a $6,500 ramp into the Catalina Justice Court on Sumner Avenue, where the council will conduct future meetings.
City Clerk Shirley Davy said the move is a requirement of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Under the act, the city has until June, 1995, to move all its second-floor offices that serve the public to a new location or provide access for people with disabilities.
“The council is moving toward putting in an elevator to accommodate people who need assistance getting up and down the stairs,” Davy said.
The city does not yet know how much an elevator will cost, she said.
