LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Red Cross to Close Its 7 Remaining Quake Centers

The American Red Cross will close its seven remaining earthquake service centers at the end of the month, spokeswoman Peggy Hinz said Thursday.
The number of victims using the service centers dwindled in recent weeks--and did not increase after Sunday’s magnitude 5.3 aftershock--to levels where it was unnecessary to keep them open, she said. The Red Cross provided meals, a place to sleep and mental health counseling at the centers.
Since the Jan. 17 temblor, the Red Cross has helped more than 32,341 families and served more than 1.7 million meals at the centers, she said.
At the peak of the relief effort, the Red Cross housed 22,004 people at its 47 shelters.
The remaining centers are in Glendale, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica, Ventura County, the Vineyard Recreation Center in Los Angeles, the UAW Local 645 Union Hall in Van Nuys and the Winnetka Recreation Center in Northridge.
