THE REVENGE OF GOD: The Resurgence of Islam, Christianity and Judaism in the Modern World by Gilles Kepel, translated from the French by Alan Braley (The Pennsylvania State University Press: $14.95.; 215 pp., paperback original). Kepel’s well-researched study examines religious revival movements in Islam, Judaism and Christianity (both American evangelical Protestantism and European Catholicism). Followers of each movement seek to remold society by repudiating “Godless” rationalism, which they blame for the erosion of some traditional values in the modern world. Kepel carefully notes differences, as well as similarities (Orthodox Jewish activists don’t seek converts, as evangelical Christians do) in this intelligent, often disturbing look at an increasingly widespread phenomenon.
