Road Less Traveled

I have just read “Exploring Ancient Mysteries in Petra” (Feb. 13). Two years ago, I rode into Petra on a horse led by a Jordanian “guide.” The horse stumbled and the “guide” grumbled all the way into and out of the valley, as we passed vestiges of a very good Roman road. It was not a comfortable experience for someone in his late 70s!
A few days later, I learned that the road used by tourists is not the only road into the site. At the other end of the valley there is a road used by the trucks that supply the many concession stands catering to the tourists.
Petra is a magnificent sight, but it would be just as magnificent if one could go in by shuttle bus on the truck road. Forcing tourists to enter on foot or on horseback when there is an alternative is ridiculous.
