The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider giving grants to two programs working to keep children safe, one by visiting schools to teach personal safety, the other by producing a video that offers youngsters alternatives to violence.
The board will review a request by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for $1,000 to create “Kids and Company: Together in Safety,” a classroom program that would teach personal safety to children in grades kindergarten through six.
The program would begin in schools in the city of Orange.
The Orange County Human Relations Commission is also requesting a $3,150 grant to develop a video and manual for middle and high school students titled “Stop in Your Tracks: Alternatives to Violence.”
The project, which includes role-playing, is designed to teach youngsters peaceful ways to deal with anger.
The grants would come from the county’s Social Programs Grants fund, which distributes money to nonprofit groups such as shelters, senior citizens centers and health-care programs.
The grants generally are between $500 and $5,000.
The Board of Supervisor will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Board Hearing Room, on the first floor of the County Hall of Administration, 10 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana.
The meetings are open to the public and include a segment dedicated to citizen comment.
