Ventura city fire officials Sunday were investigating two suspicious blazes that broke out within an hour of each other in a Ventura Avenue neighborhood.
Residents in the 100 block of East Simpson Avenue reported a house fire about 1:30 a.m. Sunday; the home was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived.
Emergency crews were able to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes, but the structure at 128 E. Simpson Ave. suffered $50,000 in damage, and the family lost possessions worth $5,000, fire investigators said. A neighboring house had paint damage.
A second fire was reported about 45 minutes later at the Westpark Recreation Center, a facility in the 400 block of West Harrison Avenue, about four blocks from the first blaze.
Investigators estimated damage to the park facility at $250.
No one was injured in either fire. Investigators said both are still under investigation.
