Herzog Carries Costa Mesa Past University, 34-7

NEWPORT BEACH — Costa Mesa running back Steve Herzog rushed for 138 yards and scored three touchdowns in 33 carries to lead the Mustangs to a 34-7 Pacific Coast League victory over University Friday at Newport Harbor High.
Herzog’s rushing touchdowns came on two one-yard runs. Herzog’s first touchdown run came in the first quarter to tie the score at 7-7 after Matt Peca’s extra point.
Herzog’s second touchdown was in the fourth quarter and made the score, 27-7.
Herzog has rushed for 1,052 yards this season and has scored 12 touchdowns.
University (1-6-1, 1-2) scored in the first quarter. Running back Johnathon Rossi scored on a 10-yard run to make the Trojans a 7-0 lead after Chris Gray’s extra point.
Costa Mesa (8-0, 3-0) meets Laguna Hills (7-1, 3-0) in a first-place showdown next Thursday night at Mission Viejo High.
