One Half Is All Jones Needs to Run Over Laguna Beach

Michael Jones again needed only a first-half performance to score five touchdowns as Laguna Hills left a lasting impression on Laguna Beach, winning 56-0, Friday night in a Pacific Coast League game.

Jones’ 180 yards in 28 carries moves him into fourth place in the Southern Section in career rushing yardage with 5,945 yards. He needs only 53 yards next week against Costa Mesa to move into third place.

Jones scored three times in the first quarter on runs of four, seven and one yard. The second touchdown run was set up by Anthony Dayes’ interception on the Artists’ third play from scrimmage.

After two more touchdown runs by Jones, of three and seven yards, put the Hawks (7-1, 3-0) ahead, 35-0, the Laguna Hills’ defense went to work.

Linebacker Dustin Adams made a shoestring interception of Laguna Beach quarterback Bryan Schissler on the next play and ran 27 yards untouched for the touchdown and a 40-0 lead.

Rather than letting the first half expire, Laguna Beach (0-8, 0-3) tired to begin a drive from inside its 20-yard line. After two illegal procedure penalties left the Artists with a first and 20 from their five-yard line, Schissler was tackled by Blake Curci in the end zone for a safety and a 43-0 Laguna Hills’ halftime lead.
