Hot! Hot! Hot!
Was Oxnard really the nation’s hot spot this weekend (B1)? . . . Some meteorologists say placement of a thermometer near the tarmac at Oxnard Airport leads to exaggerated readings. Meanwhile, residents up the coast in Santa Ynez and several other cities reached triple digits--numbers not inflated by scorching asphalt.
Capital Cases
Two men face possible death sentences in murder trials scheduled to begin this week in Ventura County Superior Court (B1). . . . One, whose case began jury selection Monday, is Alan Brett Holland, a 29-year-old Hollywood drifter accused in the fatal shooting of a woman in a Ventura parking lot. The other is Michael Raymond Johnson, charged with shooting to death a deputy who answered a domestic-disturbance call at his estranged wife’s home in Meiners Oaks.
Gleeful Golf
Golfer Paul Stankowski, originally from Oxnard, celebrates his victory in one of nine events that made up the EMC Golf Skills Challenge at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa on Monday (C8) . . . He was one of eight pros competing in a show to be televised next month. Stankowski placed fifth in the overall competition; the leader of the field--taking a $50,000 bonus--was little-known pro Billy Andrade.
Business Sprouts
Seminis Vegetable Seeds, a company formed by the merger of two seed companies, has found fertile ground for a new consolidated office and processing facility (D15D). . . . The company recently ended its long search for a new home with the purchase of a 32-acre parcel within Oxnard’s McInnes Ranch business park. The transaction was one of several that took place at the 10-year-old park in the past few months.
Weather
Mostly sunny and slightly cooler. Highs to the 90s. B7
