Council Names Special Prosecutor

The City Council has formally named Ravi Mehta, former chairman of the state Fair Political Practices Commission, as a special prosecutor to examine potential violations of Anaheim’s campaign-finance law.
The council, in a recent closed-session meeting, voted 3 to 0 in favor of hiring Mehta as special prosecutor. Mayor Tom Daly and Councilman Tom Tait abstained.
Mehta, a former Orange County prosecutor, will look into the campaign activities of Daly and former Councilman Irv Pickler during last November’s election.
Councilman Bob Zemel urged the hiring of Mehta, saying the city attorney has a conflict of interest investigating these matters since he is appointed by the council.
City Atty. Jack L. White is negotiating the terms of a contract with Mehta, which the council is expected to consider Nov. 18.
