Russell Surber of Flintridge Prep, the top high school golfer in the region, has committed to Texas, he said on Tuesday.
Surber, recently named as a second team All-American by the American Junior Golf Assn., selected Texas over USC and Texas Christian.
Ranked 14th in the nation in the Golfweek Boys’ Amateur rankings, Surber finished third in the Southern California Golf Assn. High School championships in 1996 and fifth this year. He was the 1997 Times’ prep golfer of the year in the region.
Texas has a storied golf tradition. Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw and Justin Leonard won the NCAA individual title while at Texas and went on to win major championships.
