Senate Passes Bill Limiting Burials for Convicted Veterans

WASHINGTON — Veterans sentenced to death or life in prison for capital crimes could not be buried or memorialized in federal cemeteries under a bill the Senate passed Monday and sent to the White House.
The measure was Congress’ response to the conviction of Timothy J. McVeigh, the Persian Gulf War veteran who was sentenced to death for bombing an Oklahoma City federal building in 1995.
The Senate agreed to changes by the House to limit the denial of benefits to burial or memorialization in federally funded veterans’ cemeteries. The bill also applies to veterans convicted of capital crimes in state courts.
