Margaret Harshaw, 88, soprano and mezzo-soprano with the New York Metropolitan Opera for 22 seasons. Harshaw sang 39 roles in 25 works at the Met between 1942, when she played the Second Norn in Wagner’s “Die Gotterdammerung,” and 1964, when she portrayed Ortrud in “Lohengrin.” During her career, she sang more Wagnerian roles than any other singer in the Met’s history. In Los Angeles, she performed with the San Francisco Opera at the Shrine Auditorium in 1946 and also sang at the Hollywood Bowl in 1953. From 1962 until 1993, Harshaw was a professor of voice at Indiana University. On Friday in Libertyville, Ill.
