Williams Backs Up the Talk

SAN DIEGO — Now it’s the Oakland Raiders’ turn to talk some trash.

The Raiders got their revenge against rival San Diego on Sunday night, as little-used Harvey Williams scored a career-high four touchdowns in a 38-13 rout before a record Charger crowd of 65,714.

The Raiders wanted payback, believing the Chargers were a bit mouthy after a 25-10 victory at Oakland on Oct. 5.

“When you go out like they did and beat us in Oakland and then you’re bustin’ gums like they did, we had a lot of things we wanted to come in and prove,” said Williams, who proved he can still make a big contribution to the Raiders.

He scored twice on one-yard runs and made two touchdown receptions on plays of eight and 32 yards from Jeff George, who had three scoring passes. Williams’ previous single-game high was two touchdowns.

“I was bumping my gums tonight, too,” said Williams, once a starting Raider running back who began this season as a backup to tight end Rickey Dudley. “That’s that.”

Defensive tackle Russell Maryland said the Chargers were talking trash early in the game.

“I’m sure it played a factor in a lot of the guys’ minds,” said Maryland, who had what he called his best game. “Especially during the first quarter, you see Gary Brown getting a couple of yards, he says, ‘We’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to start all over again.’ ”

Brown, who had 181 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders in October, had 86 yards before leaving with a sprained right knee.

Maryland blocked a field goal, had two sacks, forced a fumble and made eight tackles.

The 38 points were a season high for Oakland (4-7), which ended a losing streak at three games. San Diego (4-7) has given up 113 points in losing three in a row.
