The Pat Douglass era got off to a less-than-resounding start as Irvine lost its opener to San Francisco on Saturday, 75-59. It was the Anteaters’ 13th consecutive loss, three short of the school record. Lamarr Parker scored 19 points for Irvine, but the rest of the Anteaters struggled on offense. Defensively, Irvine was tenacious and, tonight, it will need to be. Pepperdine was 6-21 last season, but has three key players who did not play a year ago. Jelani Gardner, a transfer from California, omm’A Givens, a transfer from UCLA, and Gerald Brown, an All-West Coast Conference guard who sat out last season because of a knee injury, make the Waves a formidable team.
