Low-Income Apartments to Be Built on City Lot

The site of an empty, dilapidated building near downtown will be converted into about 20 apartments for low-income residents.
The City Council briefly considered limiting occupancy to senior citizens on fixed incomes. But council members, who approved the idea Tuesday, expanded the housing plan to include younger residents and others who work in the city but cannot afford to live there. At least 20% of the units at 450 Glenneyre St. will be reserved for seniors.
In January, city officials will invite developers to submit renovation proposals. The project also will be financed with a mix of low-interest loans from the state and federal tax credits, City Manager Kenneth Frank said.
