David Milch had the June blahs. The award-winning television writer-producer asked his trainer, Darrell Vienna, to find him a horse.
On June 28, Vienna dipped into the claiming ranks at Hollywood Park and took Awesome Daze, a horse on a six-race losing streak, for $50,000.
On Sunday, Awesome Daze won the $100,000 On Trust Handicap at Hollywood Park in record time, giving him four wins in six starts for his new ownership.
His three-quarter-length win increased his 1997 earnings to more than $277,000, most of it in Milch’s red-and-white colors.
Ridden by Gary Stevens, Awesome Daze ran 7 1/2 furlongs in 1:26 1/5, breaking the Hollywood Park record of 1:26 3/5 set by Elmhurst.
Megan’s Interco, the 7-5 favorite, finished second, seven lengths ahead of Canyon Crest, with Letthebighossroll fourth.
