Gas Line Fixed After Accidental Rupture

A construction crew working near Fashion Island accidentally ruptured a large natural gas line Monday, but emergency workers quickly capped the leak.
Workers using a backhoe were digging a trench about 9:30 a.m. at 875 San Clemente Drive when they hit the 3-inch, high-pressure gas line, according to fire officials. One worker ran about 200 yards to the nearby fire station on Santa Barbara Drive, and a dozen firefighters responded to the potential danger.
The firefighters and a crew from the gas company had the immediate area evacuated, and repair work was complete by 10:15 a.m., according to John Blauer, spokesman for the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department.
No injuries or other damage was reported, and the evacuation was limited to the construction site.
