Court Orders Delay in School District Formation

A state appeals court has temporarily halted the proposed formation of a Lakewood school district until signatures on a petition can be verified.
The proposed 22-campus district would be carved from four other districts that now serve children in Lakewood: ABC, Paramount, Bellflower and Long Beach Unified.
Bellflower school officials, who had brought legal action challenging the petitions and would lose a high school and three elementary schools to the new district, were pleased by the state Court of Appeal’s order.
“The Board of Education and I are pleased with the court’s decision,” said Bellflower Supt. Rebecca Turrentine.
