Bike Lane Removed From Corridor Plan

The City Council will eliminate a bike lane from the proposed Lincoln Avenue Corridor to speed up the $6.5-million improvement project’s completion.
The project, including landscaping and roadwork, is scheduled to begin in July, with completion by spring 1999. Earlier plans called for the work to be done over a decade.
Mayor Mary Ann Jones said including the bike lane would have caused delays and was not part of a recently approved plan to reconfigure the street.
City officials say the project is needed to improve a 3-mile stretch of Lincoln Avenue between the Coyote Creek bridge and Valley View Street, an area many consider to be crime-ridden.
The project has already attracted new businesses, including an International House of Pancakes restaurant and a planned 130,000-square-foot Home Depot.
