Valley Gets Home Free, 47-44

With the game on the line in overtime, Valley College was perfect from the line on Tuesday night.

Tanya McLaughlin sank two free throws with 30 seconds left and Nyoki McKeith added two more with 13 seconds remaining and the Monarchs defeated Cuesta, 47-44, in a nonconference women’s game in San Luis Obispo.

McLaughlin, a sophomore from Canyon High, scored 11 of her 17 points in the first half.

McKeith, an All-City guard at Taft High, scored 14 points, including a three-pointer to start overtime.

Meresaini Malaki had eight points and 10 rebounds, while sister Melolini Malaki added two points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Monarchs (3-3).

Cuesta (4-2), which defeated Valley by 17 points on Friday in the semifinals of the Merced tournament, got 14 points from Kelly McKay, a member of two Southern Section championship teams at Alemany High in Mission Hills.

Cal Lutheran 88, UC Santa Cruz 42--Anna Lindseth had 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Regals claimed their first victory at Thousand Oaks.

Cal Lutheran (2-1), which led, 13-0, with 13 minutes left in the first half, got 13 points from Nicole Sanchez and 11 points each from Missy Rider and Katie Placido.

Fresno Pacific 85, The Master’s 80--The Mustangs squandered a 59-42 second-half lead at Newhall.

Elizabeth Hansell had 24 points and eight rebounds, while Kasey Downer added 22 points for The Master’s (3-1).

Heide Moore had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Fresno Pacific (4-2). Shawna Beck and Runisha Jackson each scored 15 points.

The Sunbirds out-rebounded the Mustangs, 51-37.

Cal Lutheran JV 66, Oxnard 32--Kelly Jaeger had 25 points and Jennifer Thornell added 15 for the Regals’ junior varsity at Cal Lutheran.

Reserve Chris Jonenson led the Condors with nine points, while Kelly Owens and Liz Hernandez each contributed eight.

After taking a 4-2 lead with 17:56 remaining in the first half, Oxnard was outscored, 10-0, over a six-minute span and never got back into the game.

The Condors were held scoreless for the final 7:18 of the first half while Cal Lutheran was on a 13-0 run.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Bakersfield d. Moorpark, 15-9, 13-15, 15-3, 15-5--Michelle Capuano and Jolene Small each had 12 kills and three blocks for the Raiders in the first round of the Southern California Regional at Bakersfield.

Bakersfield is 18-3 and Moorpark finished 15-4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 96, Long Beach 93--John Burrell scored 35 points and had six rebounds for the Marauders at Antelope Valley.

Center Le’Tre Kelly added 22 points and 12 rebounds for Antelope Valley (4-1).

Kenny Washington had 20 points and Isamu Nichols added 18 for the Vikings (3-2).
