City Officials Select Interim Chief of Police

Police Capt. Leon Burrus will become interim head of the city’s Police Department next month with the departure of Chief Russell Siverling, a city official said.
City Manager Julio Fuentes said he selected the Alhambra police veteran to take command of the 168-employee department. Siverling leaves Dec. 1 to become police chief in Glendale.
“We are . . . pleased that our city has a highly qualified candidate to step into the interim police chief position while we conduct a selection process for a permanent police chief,” Fuentes said.
Burrus, 51, a former U.S. Marine, became an Alhambra police officer in 1969. He rose through the ranks and in 1985 became a captain and acted as department head in Siverling’s absence, city officials said.
“I am honored by the appointment and look forward to taking charge of the department while the city management seeks a permanent chief,” Burrus said.
