Deaf Lifeguard Settles One Suit Against YMCA

A deaf lifeguard who sued the national YMCA and a Long Beach branch last year after she was fired has reached an undisclosed settlement with the local organization, her attorney said Thursday.
But her lawsuit against the YMCA of the USA still stands, the attorney said. That suit alleges that the national YMCA violated the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 when it adopted a policy prohibiting deaf lifeguards.
Stacy Adam, who worked as a lifeguard for a year for the Los Altos YMCA in Long Beach, reached a settlement in a mediation conference this week, said attorney Marshall Caskey.
Adam’s federal lawsuit against the national YMCA seeks $12 million in damages.
