State Is Nation’s Worst in Creating Housing

New Census Bureau figures show that California is the worst state in the country when it comes to creating new housing.
Even though the West was the fastest-growing part of the nation from 1990 to 2000, adding 20% to its population, it was the only region to experience a decline in the number of housing units per person. That figure for the West fell about 3% during the decade.
“The shortage is a result of not having enough housing built in the last 10 years,” said Freda Radich of the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
