Helping the Deaf and Blind

I wanted to applaud you for your article on “Club Offers Support for Deaf Students” (Jan. 7). I believe that the article conveys a strong message and, with any luck, will promote other clubs and recreation centers to follow their example. I, personally, have not seen too many programs for deaf or blind students. If places have to be wheelchair-accessible, I see no reason that they shouldn’t have to be accessible to blind and deaf people as well. These disabilities are just as serious and deserve just as much care and attention. After reading this article, I will definitely suggest that we start such programs at the recreation center where I work.
The government spends incredible amounts of money on programs to keep teens out of trouble. Well, they should spend some money teaching the parents of deaf students sign language because, as the article stated, without that, they have no means of communication, and without communication, trouble is exactly what these teens will be getting themselves into. So again, thank you for printing this article. I only hope that others find it as eye-opening as I did.
