Girl, 2, Wandered Away From Day Care, Police Say

A 2-year-old girl was reunited with her mother Monday after police conducted a four-hour door-to-door search near an Anaheim elementary school where she had been found wandering alone.
Police are trying to determine if the owner of a neighborhood day-care center watching the child was neglectful, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
“It appears that the mother dropped her off at the day-care center and somehow the child wandered off,” he said.
About 11:15 a.m., another parent noticed the toddler--identified only as Eilene--wandering alone in front of Salk Elementary School in the 1400 block of Gilbert Street.
The mystery was solved several hours later when a girl of about 12 approached one of the officers and said she had been baby-sitting the child at the home-based center in the 9800 block of Harriet Lane in an unincorporated area of the county.
