A Los Angeles police officer responding to a burglar alarm at a Canoga Park tobacco shop early Wednesday shot and wounded a man who jumped the officer’s partner and tried to grab his gun, an LAPD spokesman said.
A 22-year-old man, whom police would not identify, was hospitalized in critical condition after the incident, reported about 4:30 a.m. in the 22000 block of Sherman Way, police spokesman Lt. Horace Frank said.
The west San Fernando Valley patrol officers involved in the incident were identified as seven-year veteran Raphael Ferrer, 33, and 24-year-old rookie Officer Ryan Kennedy, Frank said.
According to Frank, the officers found the back door broken open and were searching the shop when the suspect jumped from behind a counter, fought with Kennedy and grabbed for the officer’s pistol, Frank said.
Fearing that he and his partner were in danger, Ferrer fired twice, striking the suspect in the torso, Frank said.
Detectives from the LAPD Critical Incident Investigation Division are reviewing the shooting, Frank said. A Los Angeles district attorney’s team also responded, he said.
