SAO PAULO, Brazil — The bullet-riddled body of a left-wing Brazilian mayor who was kidnapped two days earlier was found near Sao Paulo on Sunday, police said.
Celso Daniel, the mayor of Santo Andre and a member of the opposition Workers Party, was found dead about 40 miles south of Sao Paulo.
President Fernando Henrique Cardoso said federal police would help with the investigation.
“We must wage a war against organized crime, against banditry in Brazil and against impunity,” Cardoso said at news conference in Brasilia, the capital.
Daniel was last seen Friday night when eight armed men abducted him after a brief gunfight.
