Two Slain During Protest at President’s Compound

Police in Guyana opened fire on demonstrators who broke into the presidential compound in Georgetown, the capital, killing two people and wounding six others during a protest timed to coincide with the start of a Caribbean summit.
Demonstrators reacted by overturning and torching at least three cars and setting two commercial buildings ablaze. President Bharat Jagdeo was not in his office at the time. It was unclear if any protesters were armed. Sixteen people were arrested.
Thousands of opposition supporters were marching to protest alleged government discrimination as Caribbean leaders were gathering for a three-day summit.
