At least 39 people were killed when landslides caused by powerful Typhoon Chataan destroyed houses on the island of Chuuk in Micronesia, an official said.
Ten people were missing and about 100 injured in landslides Monday and Tuesday, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency, Chuuk public affairs director Gideon Kikku said from the island’s capital, Weno.
About 1,500 houses were damaged in the landslides and 5-foot-deep floods unleashed by the typhoon.
Chuuk is near Guam, about 1,750 miles east of the Philippines.
