Casting ‘The Producers’

Great idea to cast Jason Alexander and Martin Short in “The Producers” (“Alexander and Short Will Team for L.A. ‘Producers,’ ” by Don Shirley, July 12). But how about going one step further and having them alternate the roles, as John C. Reilly and Philip Seymour Hoffman did so memorably with “True West” in New York a couple of years ago? Just a thought.

No question that Jason Alexander and Martin Short are among the most talented of comedy artists; however, methinks Alexander is too young to play the role of the ever-scheming Max Bialystok and Short is too old to portray the youthful and super-neurotic Leo Bloom. Alexander mentoring Short? Fuhgeddaboutit!
