Berlin opera houses get funds

The German culture minister said Wednesday she had come up with extra funds to stop the curtain from falling on one of Berlin’s three opera houses that the government, saddled with $53 billion in debts, had threatened to close.
Christina Weiss told a news conference that she had found an extra $28.9 million to help keep all three Berlin operas open after a tough fight with her cabinet colleagues, all under pressure to save cash.
“Berlin can keep its three opera houses,” she said. “Despite the really precarious budgetary position that you are all aware of, the federal government had found a way to keep culture in the capital city safe from harm.”
