U.N. Military Observers Begin Deploying

A team of U.N. military observers began deploying in Ivory Coast, spreading out across the divided nation to work with international troops enforcing a cease-fire. The 26 unarmed officers could be joined by 50 more before the end of the mission’s six-month initial mandate.
Ivory Coast sank into civil war after a rebel uprising in September. A peace accord was agreed upon in May, but the nation is still divided into rebel- and government-held zones.
