Singapore Takes Another Crack at Gum

People in Singapore will soon be allowed to buy chewing gum -- but only from pharmacies and only types that aid “dental and oral hygiene,” the Trade and Industry Ministry announced. A prescription will not be required.
The government initially will allow Orbit and Orbit White, both from Chicago-based Wrigley. A ministry spokeswoman said other gum makers would follow. The tightly controlled city-state outlawed gum in 1992, complaining that chewed wads were fouling pavements, buses and subway trains -- which are now famously spotless.
