Sleeping Camper Survives Bear Attack

SALT LAKE CITY — A black bear tried to drag a camper from his sleeping bag in eastern Utah’s Desolation Canyon, wildlife officials said Wednesday.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said the attack is the first in more than a decade.
Nick Greeve, 18, of West Linn, Ore., was treated for puncture wounds and cuts and released from a Price hospital after the Monday attack.
The bear grabbed Greeve by the head and neck and tried to drag him from his sleeping bag. His screams awoke other campers, who chased the bear away.
Wildlife officers and members of the Ute Indian tribe tried without success to hunt down and destroy the bear, said Bill Bates, of the Division of Wildlife Resources.
The attack happened in a remote canyon about 120 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.
