Funds for the arts

As founder and music director of the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra, I sympathize with conductor Arthur B. Rubinstein (“Quiet in the Glen -- for Now,” July 6). For more than 23 years, our orchestra has been entertaining Valley audiences with professional performances of the symphonic repertoire. Although we receive some private, corporate, and L.A. County grants, our organization survives on subscription support from our diverse and dedicated audiences at Pierce College.
It is an ongoing struggle to raise the funds necessary for a performing arts program. In this era of budget cutbacks, we must not forget those things that enhance the quality of life in our communities.
