Bebop precursor

In his review of the new Artie Shaw reissue CD (“Tuneful Lessons in Music History,” July 6), Don Heckman observed, “passages in his solos sound like precursors of bebop.” Apparently, Charlie Parker thought so too. He reportedly advised young alto saxophonist Dave Schildkraut to study Shaw’s playing.
