A chance break led to the arrest Saturday of a man sought in the abduction of his three daughters -- and also wanted for questioning in the apparent killing of his estranged wife.
The three girls, ages 2, 4 and 8, were found distraught but safe, authorities said.
Napa County sheriff’s deputies arrested Dennis Day Jefferson Jr., 32, after someone called in a report about 8:30 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle possibly involved in deer poaching.
A deputy checked the license plates on the parked Chevrolet Suburban and found that Sacramento County authorities wanted the vehicle in connection with “an outstanding warrant for association with a homicide,” Capt. Mike Loughran said.
Backup was called in, and Jefferson was arrested without incident.
He was being sought for allegedly battering his estranged wife, whose body was found by a relative Friday in her Sacramento-area home. He was returned to Sacramento County on Saturday for questioning but had not been charged.
