Sheriff’s deputies investigating a report of a stolen car in South Los Angeles fatally shot the driver after he drove into one of the deputies, according to authorities.
A second man in the car was shot twice in the upper torso and hospitalized in critical condition, Deputy Ron Bottomley said.
Four deputies had been patrolling in the 1100 block of East 58th Street when they were flagged down at 12:30 a.m. and told that a Kia Spectra had just been stolen, Bottomley said.
The deputies saw a Kia parked nearby with two men inside. As the deputies approached, the driver accelerated toward them, striking one of the deputies, who rolled onto and then off the hood, Bottomley said.
When the driver again turned the car toward the deputy, all four officers opened fire, authorities said. The car crashed into another vehicle across the street before backing up and crashing again, authorities said.
The driver, Macario Martinez, 20, was shot in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger’s name was withheld.
The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s homicide bureau.
