U.S. Marks End of Mission at Incirlik Base

The United States shut down its last major military mission in Turkey, saying the defeat of Saddam Hussein ended the need for Turkish-based missions to monitor an Iraqi “no-fly” zone.
At a ceremony marking the end of the mission at Incirlik Air Base, Gen. Charles Wald denied that the departure indicated trouble in U.S. relations with Turkey, which refused a request to allow U.S. troops to deploy into Iraq from Turkey. The base will still house 1,400 U.S. personnel serving in a NATO mission.
