Wreckage Could Be Confederate Warship

An underwater survey has found what may be remnants of the Confederate ironclad warship Virginia, originally a Union ship named Merrimack, that fought the Union’s ironclad Monitor in a 1862 battle that was the first between metal-shielded ships. The survey is being conducted as part of the construction of a marine terminal on the Elizabeth River in Virginia.
