No Quarter

I see that mall developer Rick Caruso admits to being so turned off by New Orleans’ French Quarter dirt that he doesn’t see any reason to ever go back [“Alternate Reality,” by Tina Daunt, Dec. 1].
That’s an excellent decision, Mr. Caruso. It will leave more room to visit for those of us who love the Quarter, warts and all. You’re welcome to stay in your mega-engineered environments, with the upscale chain stores (always the same ones), piped-in garbage pop and cutesy fountains.
The Grove is an impressive achievement, but as an urban “experience” it is 100% bogus. Cities have a soul, a heart and a history; all the Grove has is commerce, dressed to the nines.
