Crime Falls to 30-Year Low, Police Chief Says

Crime in Fresno hit a 30-year low in 2003, continuing a bumpy downward trend that began in the mid-1990s, Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
But Dyer emphasized Tuesday that the achievement was a small victory in a larger struggle.
The department’s statistics showed that Fresno had 70 major violent and property crimes per 1,000 residents in 2003. The number had peaked at 120 in 1991, 1994 and 1995 before dropping below 95 in 1997, and continuing generally to decline.
The only violent crime to increase last year was rape, police said.
