Two young men were killed Tuesday afternoon when their car drifted into an opposing traffic lane and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer truck on California 118 north of Camarillo, authorities said.
The victims were not immediately identified, but California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Reid said both men appeared to be in their 20s. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Reid, the men were traveling east on the two-lane highway near Aggen Road when their Honda Civic slammed into a westbound big rig driven by Octavio Alonso Rendon Juarez, 21, of Ensenada, Mexico.
Juarez had been traveling to Oxnard to unload 74,800 pounds of onions and radishes, Reid said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Reid said that both highway lanes were closed for more than two hours, causing a major backup in both directions.
