Man Charged in 1996 Abduction

MANASSAS, Va. — A man once suspected of the killings of two female hikers at a remote Virginia campsite was indicted Monday in the 1996 abduction of a female motorist.
Darrell David Rice, 36, was charged with abduction with intent to defile, robbery and malicious wounding.
Prince William County Commonwealth’s Atty. Paul Ebert said Rice has been a suspect in the case for years, and is suspected in similar cases on Virginia Route 29. Rice is serving about 11 years for the attempted abduction of a bicyclist in Shenandoah National Park in 1997.
In February, a federal judge dropped charges against Rice in the 1996 killings of the hikers, Julianne Williams and Laura Winans, after DNA evidence cast doubt on the case.
