A 65-year-old man was arrested at John Wayne Airport on Thursday after trying to board a flight to Washington, D.C., with a handgun and knife in his luggage, officials said.
Authorities did not release his name, saying they did not want to jeopardize the investigation. “If other people are involved,” said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Hayward Miller, “it would be inappropriate to release that information.”
Miller said the man was arrested about 1 p.m. after the items were discovered during routine X-ray screening. The United Airlines flight he was trying to board departed on time.
The man was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of possessing a firearm in an airport, a felony under federal law.
