From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The City Council took a small step toward building up a fund to pay for more police officers Wednesday as council members led by Wendy Greuel voted to consolidate the city’s numerous call centers, a move that would save an estimated $540,000 annually.
The money is to be deposited in a fund the council created for savings from increased government efficiency.
The council plans to reserve that money to hire more police officers at a cost of about $100,000 per officer.
