Man Shot in Standoff Is Declared Brain Dead

A man who was shot in the head by police as he held a Mexican Consulate employee hostage has been declared brain dead, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Thursday.
The 19-year-old man, who has been identified as Manuel Jubenal Ortiz-Gonzalez of Jalisco, Mexico, was examined by two doctors who made the determination, according to Betsy Magdaleno, a coroner’s office investigator.
Los Angeles police spokeswoman Kathy Simpson said the case was still being investigated.
On Tuesday morning, a man entered the consulate with what appeared to be a pistol and demanded attention from the news media. Later, Ortiz-Gonzalez, left the consulate with a clerk who worked on the fourth floor.
TV cameras recorded the scene as he held a gun to the woman’s head with one hand while his other arm was around her throat. The pregnant woman escaped unharmed after a police officer shot Ortiz-Gonzalez.
