A party to celebrate the creative process

Outpost for Contemporary Art -- a newly formed “gallery without walls” -- and the Museum of Contemporary Art are hosting a “Collage Party” at the Geffen Contemporary through Thursday. The party is a weeklong open-studio residency by Winnipeg, Canada-based Paul Butler and, according to organizers, “a free space for artists to meet interact and share a process of production that creates a spontaneous energy of social and creative experimentation.”

Or, as Butler explains on his website: “Basically an excuse to get together with friends, have a couple of drinks and make some art.”

More than 100 artists have been invited to partake, and others who want an invitation to participate in the art-making process may access the link on the Outpost website, www.out post-art.org. No invitation is required to attend the closing reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

MOCA has donated fabric, cardboard and other materials for the artistic endeavor. Ultimately, Butler hopes to produce a catalog with the best images, said Julie Deamer, Outpost director.

The Collage Party coincides with “The Royal Art Lodge: Ask the Dust,” a show of work by the Winnipeg-based artist collective The Royal Art Lodge. That exhibition opens Sunday and runs through Feb. 14 at MOCA Pacific Design Center.
