Part 2
The story so far: Carrieâs parents have agreed to consider letting her take skiing lessons over Thanksgiving. Part 2
*
The next day Carrie listened as her dad telephoned Mountain Challenge. He must have asked a zillion questions.
âGuess what?â he said after hanging up.
âWhat, Daddy?â asked Carrie.
âWeâre going skiing.â
It took forever for Thanksgiving vacation to arrive. Carrie could hardly believe it when they finally walked into the Mountain Challenge office. She could smell the cinnamon in the pot of hot apple cider as her dad signed her in. Then she felt a light tap on her shoulder.
âCarrie, my name is Burt, and Iâll be your ski instructor.â
Carrie beamed.
âThe first thing I tell our families is that we want our students to be safe, to have fun and to learn how to ski. Sound good?â
âYou bet,â answered Carrie enthusiastically.
âNow Carrie,â Burt continued, âyour parents guided you in. Do you use a cane?â
âYes, sometimes.â
âOK. And do you have friends who ski or snowboard?â
âYes, my friend Geoffrey skis. And heâs up here too.â
âSuper!â said Burt. âNow before we get started, I need you to promise to let me know how youâre feeling at all times -- hungry for brownies, thirsty for hot chocolate, cold, tired, scared, whatever, got it?â
âGot it, Burt, I will.â
âNow tell me, Carrie,â Burt continued, âwhat other things do you do?â
âI run and play goal-ball, and sometimes we go tandem bicycling.â
âGreat. Your application says that youâre totally blind. Do you have sensitivity to light?â
âNo,â Carrieâs mom interjected.
âOK then, Carrie,â continued Burt. âItâs important you always wear protective goggles to protect your eyes from the sun.â
âAre they like the sick goggles Geoffrey says they wear in the X Games?â
âYes,â said Burt. âNow letâs go and pick up your equipment.â
âOops, Iâve got to go,â said Carrieâs mom.
Carrie turned her head. âWhere are you going?â
âOh, somewhere,â she answered.
Carrie felt a shiver of fear. âWhere?â
But Carrie heard the door close. Her mother had already left.
âWell,â Carrieâs dad said, âthat settles it for me. Iâm going to get some hot chocolate and read the sports section.â
âDad!â
Burt gently took Carrie by the arm and said, âCome on. Letâs go skiing, Carrie.â
Carrie did not let fear stop her. âOK, Burt, Iâm ready.â
Wednesday: How will Burt teach Carrie to ski?
